Moodly app and website · Last updated 18 October 2026
In short
Moodly has no account, no server, no analytics, no ads and no tracking.
Everything you enter in Moodly is stored only on your phone. We never receive it.
Data only leaves your phone when you decide so: an encrypted backup, a PDF you share, or a diagnostic report you email to us.
The website sets no cookies and loads nothing from third parties.
1. Who is responsible
The controller under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:
Albert Nimtz (Knoxx Media)
Gliesmaroder Straße 93
38104 Braunschweig
Germany
Email: privacy@knoxx.media
Knoxx Media is run by a private person. It is not a company. We have not appointed a data protection officer, and the law does not require one.
2. The Moodly app
2.1 Data stored on your device
Moodly works without an account and without a server. Everything you enter is stored in a database inside the app on your phone. This includes:
mood entries (time, mood, energy) and free-text notes
tags, events, your own rating scales and reminder times
if you turn these features on: cycle data, and data about self-harm urges and incidents
health data that you choose to import from Health Connect (see 2.2)
your settings, such as language, theme and enabled features
Some of this is health data, which the GDPR treats as especially sensitive. We cannot see, read or receive any of it. It never goes to us or to anyone else, unless you send it yourself as described below. If you turn on the app lock, Moodly stores only a cryptographic hash of your PIN, in Android's secure storage. If you turn on automatic backup, Moodly also stores a key made from your backup password there, never the password itself (see 2.3). Since version 2.0.0 (build 46), Moodly does not take part in Android's automatic cloud backup or device-to-device transfer, so your data is not copied to your Google account or to a new phone. In older builds, Android may include the app data in your device backup to your Google account, if you have turned that on in Android.
Moodly also keeps a small technical log on your device (max. 512 KB) to help find errors. It stays on your device unless you send a diagnostic report (see 2.5).
2.2 Health Connect
If you turn this on, Moodly reads the following data from Android Health Connect: sleep, steps, exercise sessions, distance, total calories burned, and menstruation. Moodly shows sleep, steps, exercise and cycle data next to your moods. Distance and calories are only requested because the health integration needs them in order to work; Moodly does not display them. Moodly never writes data to Health Connect.
The imported data is stored only on your device. You can delete it in the app settings at any time, and you can withdraw the permission in the Health Connect settings at any time.
Moodly's use of information received from Health Connect will adhere to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not sell this data, use it for advertising, or share it with anyone.
2.3 Optional backup to Dropbox or a file
You can create a backup of your data. Before saving, Moodly encrypts it on your phone with a password that you choose (AES-256-GCM). We do not know this password and cannot restore it.
Backup file: saved to a place you pick with Android's file dialog.
Dropbox: if you connect your Dropbox account, Moodly uploads the encrypted backup to its own app folder (Apps/media.knoxx.moodly.app) and keeps the latest 10 manual backups. Moodly can only access this folder. The login token is stored in Android's secure storage and is deleted when you disconnect.
Automatic backup to Dropbox (optional): if you turn it on, Moodly makes a key from your backup password and keeps only this key on your phone, in Android's secure storage. The password itself is not stored. With the key, Moodly encrypts and uploads a backup by itself after your data changes. While it is on, each phone uses two automatic backup files in the app folder, in addition to the latest 10 manual backups. Their file names contain a random ID and your phone's manufacturer and model. If you turn automatic backup off or disconnect Dropbox, the stored key is deleted. When you turn it off, you can also delete the automatic backup files.
The Dropbox provider is Dropbox International Unlimited Company (Ireland) or Dropbox, Inc. (USA), and data may be processed in the USA. Dropbox takes part in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Dropbox only receives the encrypted file and its file name and cannot read your entries. The Dropbox privacy policy applies to your Dropbox account: dropbox.com/privacy. Legal basis: your consent and your request (Art. 6(1)(a) and (b) and Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR).
2.4 PDF report
You can create a PDF summary, for example for your therapist. Before you create it, you choose what goes in. The PDF is not encrypted. You decide where to save it or whom to share it with, using Android's share dialog. We do not receive it.
2.5 Diagnostic report
If you want help with a problem, you can send us a diagnostic report by email. Moodly creates a text file and opens your email app; nothing is sent until you press send. The report contains: app version, device manufacturer and model, Android version, language, time zone, a random session ID, your app settings, a technical log, and the number of stored items. It does not contain your entries, notes or tag names. We use the report only to find and fix the problem, and delete it when the problem is solved. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR.
2.6 Permissions
Internet: only for Dropbox backup.
Notifications, exact alarms, start after reboot: for reminders. These are created on your device; there is no push service.
Biometrics: to unlock the app lock with your fingerprint or face. Moodly never receives your biometric data. Android handles it.
Health Connect: read access only, see 2.2.
2.7 Deleting your data
You can delete single entries, and all cycle, self-harm or Health Connect data, in the app. To delete everything, uninstall Moodly or clear its storage in Android settings. Backups you created stay where you saved them. You can delete them in your file manager or in Dropbox. In Moodly you can also disconnect Dropbox.
When you open the website or download the app file, your browser automatically sends technical data to our hosting provider's server: IP address, date and time, the page or file requested, the amount of data transferred, the referrer URL, and your browser and operating system. This is necessary to deliver the website and keep it secure. The hosting provider processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement. Log files are deleted after a short time, unless they are needed to investigate an attack. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.
3.2 No cookies, no tracking
The website does not use cookies, analytics or tracking. Fonts and all other files come from our own server. If you choose a language or a light/dark theme, your browser saves this choice locally (keys moodly_lang and moodly_theme). This is never sent to us, and you can delete it at any time in your browser settings. This storage is strictly necessary for a function you asked for (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG).
4. When you contact us
If you write to us by email (for example privacy@knoxx.media or moodly@knoxx.media), we use your email address and message only to answer you. We delete them when the matter is finished, unless the law requires us to keep them longer. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR.
5. External links
The app and the website link to other websites, for example Ko-fi (donations), crisis helplines and the Health Connect page in the Google Play Store. These links open in your browser or in another app. Those services are responsible for their own data processing. Moodly does not send them any of your data.
6. Age
Moodly is intended for people aged 18 and older. Because we receive no data from the app, we cannot know who uses it.
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
access the data we hold about you (Art. 15)
have it corrected (Art. 16) or deleted (Art. 17)
restrict its processing (Art. 18)
data portability (Art. 20)
object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21)
withdraw your consent at any time, with effect for the future (Art. 7(3))
To use these rights, email privacy@knoxx.media. Please note: we have no data from the app. You control that data yourself on your device.
You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority. The authority responsible for us is:
Die Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Niedersachsen
Prinzenstraße 5, 30159 Hannover, Germany lfd.niedersachsen.de
8. Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the app or the website changes. The date at the top shows the current version.
Datenschutzerklärung
Moodly-App und Website · Stand: 18. Oktober 2026
Kurz gesagt
1. Verantwortlicher
Verantwortlich im Sinne der Datenschutz-Grundverordnung (DSGVO) ist:
Albert Nimtz (Knoxx Media)
Gliesmaroder Straße 93
38104 Braunschweig
Deutschland
E-Mail: privacy@knoxx.media
Moodly schreibt keine Daten in Health Connect.
Moodly's use of information received from Health Connect will adhere to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Rechtsgrundlage: deine Einwilligung und dein Auftrag (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a und b, Art. 9 Abs. 2 lit. a DSGVO).
2.4 PDF-Bericht
Du kannst eine PDF-Zusammenfassung erstellen, z. B. für deine Therapeutin oder deinen Therapeuten. Vorher wählst du aus, was hineinkommt.
Rechtsgrundlage: Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO.
3.2 Keine Cookies, kein Tracking
Schreib dazu an privacy@knoxx.media.
